The last 2 miles of the main motorway from the airport to Fujairah was festooned with huge banners every 100 yards, advertising the Damas World 8 Ball Pool Championship in Fujairah. In fact, signage and PR in general was the best I've ever seen for a tournament. I posted my articles all over the world and was rewarded by them being translated into such unlikely languages as Spanish, Hungarian and Russian, and my photographs were published in tonnes of newspapers in the Emirates and Gulf area - I even got quoted in the Manila Times newspaper in the Philippines, by pool writer and tournament organiser, Ronnie Nathanielsz.
My first visit to the United Arab Emirates and all I can say is, "I can't wait to return next year" - it's an awesome place, the people are REALLY nice and the weather was gorgeous. Dubai is ten times weirder than Las Vegas, I swam in the Persian Gulf, the pool clubs that I saw were brilliant, and last but not least, the hospitality of the tournament hosts was only exceeded by their generosity.
To cap it all off, I got to see some excellent pool including Wu Chia Ching making history not only as the youngest World Champion ever, but also as the only player to win the World 8 Ball Championship AND the World 9 Ball Championship in the same year.
Brilliant! 01 noviembre Fireworks at Gun WharfI love fireworks. I've missed some of the big displays in recent years, but this year is different... Trafalgar day celebrations and Royal visits means that Portsmouth is exploding all over the place this year, and I've attended most of the events! :D
Not the best of photos but you get the idea...
The new Spinnaker Tower (was supposed to be open for the Millenium celebrations) was lit up in a cycle of red, white and blue to commemorate Nelson's victory at Trafalgar.
Kaboom!
The fireworks were launched from a barge in the harbour, Power FM were there with the most recently evicted contestants from "The X Factor" doing a number on stage. (There was a pretty cool band on before them, doing a Green Day cover.)
